The Mayan Calendar is not ending June 3-4, 2016

This terrible article claims that “scholars” have released the REAL Mayan calendar end date and it’s June 3 or 4, because leap years!  (full screen print below; don't reward ignorance with clicks and page views)
Can we just stop it?
An actual expert is quoted, and he says actual correct things about the Long Count, and notice that no where in his statement does he say that erroneous leap-year based calculations cause the end to change:
“As far as we know, the people of Mesoamerica, the Maya included, didn’t care about leap years,” Anthony Aveni, an expert in ancient Mesoamerican astronomy at Colgate University told the National Geographic.
“Our philosophy about leap year is a complicated scheme to make the seasons jibe with the calendar,” Aveni said. “They were more concerned that time should be unbroken, not interfered with, and that the count of time should have continuity.”

Exactly. The Long Count Calendar counts DAYS.  It doesn’t count years.  It doesn’t care about leap years.
Even if you assume that the Long Count is only 13 Baktuns long (I’m not in that group, but I respect the thinking of those who are; 20 Baktuns makes way more sense to me)…it’s still way past 13 Baktuns.   The new chosen date, June 3, 2016, is 13.0.3.9.0 3-Zotz 3-Ahau.  Ahau is indeed the end of a cycle—a 20 day one.  Every 20 days there’s an Ahau date.
Notice that the Long Count date starts with 13.  That’s because Baktun 13 started in 2012, right on schedule, 1,872,000 days after it began.  It doesn’t matter if you correlate it with the Jewish calendar, the Islamic calendar, the Egyptian calendar (which the article does mention, who knows why).  It counts DAYS not YEARS and it is not a solar calendar.  A day is a day is a day.   The correlation between the Mayan calendars and the Gregorian calendar (our calendar) changes by a day every leap year (that’s why it’s so hard to calculate).
(Also, the concept of a "leap year" wasn't invented until 45 BC, 3000+ years after the beginning of the Long Count.)
Dragging the 365-day Haab calendar into the mix is just obfuscation and ignorance (and the Haab also doesn’t have leap years).  The Haab isn’t contained within the structure of the Long Count the way the Tzolkin is and doesn’t synch up with it.  Instead, the Long Count has the Tun period, which is 18 20-day Uinal periods to approximate a year. But again, the point of the Long Count was to count DAYS not YEARS.  It’s an odometer where most sections are 0-19 (except the Tun, which is 0-17), created by people who used base-20 instead of base-10.
Bringing in a Western astrology chart is also obfuscation, because Western and Mesoamerican astrology are not related in any way.
The 1260 day difference is because… it’s been 1260 days since 13.0.0.0.0.
Stop spreading lies through ignorance, please.

Jaguar Nights Companion #1: Reverse Tzolkin Ephemeris
This e-book is part of the Jaguar Nights series of calendars and books. It is a reverse ephemeris—instead of looking up a Gregorian calendar date to find which Tzolkin date it is, all the Gregorian dates from 1900 to 2060 are ranked by Tzolkin date. Find out when a Tzolkin date last happened and when it will happen again. This can be useful for interpreting divination results, electional astrology, personal guidance, journaling, daykeeping, and more. This is not meant to be a stand-alone book; you need knowledge of the sacred 260-day Tzolkin calendar of the Maya to utilize the information. Only $5.

11/11/11 Welcome to the 11th gate

Today is the 11th gate, the "big one" we've all been waiting for since the series of gates started on 1/1/1 (which seems so long ago).  There are two more gates, of course, 12/12/12 and the final 12/21/2012 which initiates Baktun 13 in the Mayan Long Count calendar.
In numerology, 11 is a master number.  It signifies you plus God (whoever you think God is).  So today is a godly day, multiplied. (22 is also a master number, and in some numerology systems so are 33 and 44, but we only have 13 gates so it won't get that high!  Maybe on 02/22/2022 something will happen.)
It's a time of global and personal activation, of energy upgrades.  Take everything in and transform.
This series of 13 gates is unique because usually a galactic gate opens and then closes.  In 1999 there was one that opened between 2 blue moons (opened on the first one, closed on the second one) and the energy was crazy--but temporary.  These gates, however, are permanent.   Each one builds on the energies and changes of the one(s) that came before.
So even if you don't think you feel anything, or don't understand what's going on, that's okay.  You won't miss anything--it's happening even if you don't know it.  The crazy occupy wall street thing? I'm sure that's part of the changes.

10-28-2011--Calleman's calendar end

Today is finally here.  On this particular 13-Ahau, out of all the 13-Ahauob around 12-21-2012, Calleman picked this one, today, to be HIS idea of the "end" of the Mayan calendar.  (Why not 14-July 2012?)
I'm waiting.  The sun is shining.  It's a little cold out.   No end seems to be in sight.
Calleman's fractal concept of the Long Count is that the 13 Baktuns (we are coming to the end of Baktun 12) equal the 13 Heavens.  But somehow he has also decided that the Tzolkin ends today.  As in, tomorrow is NOT 1-Imix, but nothing.  Huh?   But then he hedges and says maybe it will continue.  I really don't pretend to understand his interpretation of the calendars.  It SOUNDS good on the surface, especially if you don't have any background, but when you really sit and think about it, it's all illogical.
His claim:
(T)he universe attains its highest quantum state and creates a new stage for life (at the top of the nine-storied pyramid). It is thus a common misunderstanding that a “new” cycle will begin after the calendar comes to an end. This is a misunderstanding because what is coming to an end is not a cycle to begin with, but nine linear directed evolutionary waves. The only aspect of the prophetic Mayan calendar system that may be described as cyclical is the 260 day tzolkin and this is the only cycle that will come to an end.
I have no idea what that means.  He goes on to say that
This would likely mean an abrupt end to all future energetic regulation of our lives and actions and a sort of freedom shock. Life would be lived fully moment by moment by moment and each moment would be an eternity that would not be organically linked to other moments.
I thought we were all supposed to be living in the moment already?

You know what the sad thing is?  There really are AWESOME fractals in the Tzolkin.  I wish I could love his ideas, but they don't quite click for me.
I wonder if he will go away tomorrow or jump online to post about today?

2012 movie

I saw the 2012 movie.  And I did not have to be gagged and I was not thrown out.
Crazy busy still on my History Channel application, plus it's November and I'm doing National Novel Writing Month, and I had pink eye AND the flu in the same week.  I will write a review or something about the movie in the next few days.

Whoo-hoo!

Got an email from someone at the History Channel who is looking for a pair of people to host a new SERIES (not a one-off show!) on 2012 and related subjects.   Not sure I'd be the greatest HOST but I would be a great asset on their writing and research side.
Working like mad on the application, trying to remember everything I've ever done and learned and where.   On paper I am pretty damn impressive, am I not? I'd hired me.  Hope they feel the same way!
Nice to be recognized for all the hard work I've done for so long in relative obscurity.  Will keep you all informed.

Welcome to the 9th gate and a new Tzolkin!

Today is the 9th of 13 gates leading up to the 2012 event. (The 13th gate is 12-21-2012.) Today another new burst of energy will permeate our universe. I wonder what it will be? Has everyone finished integrating gate 8's energies?
Advertising is increasing for the 2012 movie. It's good, I guess, to make more people aware that something is going to happen in 3 years, but at the same time I hate that what the movie is spreading/advocating is a bunch of lies.

Mayan crop circle found in England

A supposed Mayan apocalypse crop circle was found this week in England. A picture of it from the original article is above. How exactly this shape predicts the end of the world, I don't know. I am so sick of all these people who wouldn't know the Mayan calendar if it bit them on the ass talking about it. A supposed crop circle expert gushes: "This is one of the most interesting crop circles I have ever seen. It is definitely a Mayan symbol and we are sure it is linked to the Mayan calendar, which ends in 2012. It appears to be a warning about the world coming to an end when the calendar does. For the ancient Maya, reaching the end of a cycle was a momentous event, so we are taking this crop circle very seriously as an indicator of a possibly huge event in 2012."
Show me where ANY of that is on that crop circle. The Pi one, well, I might not exactly understand how it shows Pi, but I can see that it shows some sort of math thing.(Ironically, the Pi circle was found just about a year ago and not far from where this Mayan one is.)

2012 movie, new trailer

There is a new trailer for the 2012 movie, now pushed back to a Nov 13, 2009 release date.
With the new trailer in mind (one version below, I think the one on Yahoo is slightly different), I can say I probably WON'T be yelling at the screen as much as I thought I would, because I don't think there is anything having to do with the Mayan calendar in it. It's just a how-many-ways-can-we-destroy-the-earth-in-one-movie movie. The trailer shows what I think is Palenque for a few seconds and says something like "the earth's oldest civilization tried to warn us". (What? Sumer? Babylon?) And then there are meteors, floods, buildings crashing down randomly, what is apparently California falling into the Pacific, and what I think is an aircraft carrier falling onto the White House from a tidal wave. All that's missing are volcanoes, or maybe they haven't finished the CGI for those yet.
I know this video blows my border, but I can't make it any smaller than 480 wide.

I'm still going to see it of course, but I can probably leave the duct tape home. As more trailers are released, I'll let you know.

Would you read this book? Children of the Deep: 2012

Working on yet another pitch for my Cthulhu Mythos end of the world novel:
--
Children of the Deep: 2012.
When the end of the world comes, who will you love?
It's 2012, and the world is ending. The meteor Ag-Noggoth burns in the sky, heading toward Earth, and the buzz in the New Age and Pagan communities is: Change or die. Meri, a freelance writer, mocks the miracle power beads and various Xochitl Tictl herbal concoctions that everyone seems to be addicted to. Then she falls in love with a man who is like no other she's ever encountered.
When the end of the world comes, who will you be?
Drawn by her lover and his mysterious family into the cult of Becoming, with its refrain of "change or die," Meri slowly slips from reporting the phenomena to being its figurehead. All over the world, people are becoming...but what will they finally be?
--
Is that enough or do I need to bring into it that there's another sentient humanoid race on earth who is going to take over?
I used this next pitch, which goes in a different direction, for a recent get-an-agent contest . I didn't win so I don't know if the pitch is crap or if they wanted something else. It had very specific rules--no more than 3 sentences/150 words which is why there's so much punctuation.
--
26,000 years ago, a race of aquatic humanoids crashed on Earth; abandoned by their god Ag-Noggoth, they hid—and waited. As the dawn of a new age approaches, humanity rapidly begins to evolve. Freelance writer Meri is caught in something bigger than she can imagine, in love with a man who isn't what he seems, and as the comet called Ag-Noggoth approaches Earth, Meri holds the fate of humanity—and that of the Children of the Deep—in her newly webbed fingers.

All comments welcome.

2012 Talk Tomorrow!

I hope everyone can make my 2012 talk tomorrow in Wethersfield, CT at the monthly ASC meeting.  I've posted the PDF handouts here; they won't be very useful without hearing the talk though.  They are only for personal, noncommercial use.  That means you can't do a horoscope for someone using my notes and make money or get any compensation for it.

The Long Count & 2012

Here's some basic information on the Long Count and 2012 that I just put together for an answer at Askville.
The people of Meso-America had a series of elaborate calendars. One of them was the Long Count, which is simply a count of days since what they think was the beginning of the world (~3113 BCE). It's like an odomoter. A Long Count date is a series of 5 numbers--today's date is 12.19.16.2.14, for instance (March 6, 2009).
Basically that means it has been (12x144,000)+(19x7,200)+(16x360)+(2x20)+(14x1) days since they think the world began. (1,728,000)+(136,800)+(5760)+(40)+(14)=1,870,614 days-- or almost 5125 years.
On 12-21-2012, the Long Count date will be 13.00.00.00.00. This is in NO WAY the end of the Long Count--it can go up to 19 and then another set of numbers would be added (1.00.00.00.00.00, but that's thousands of years away).
Although 13 was a sacred number to the Maya, and they celebrated any turning of the Baktuns (we'll be going from Baktun 12 to Baktun 13), they did not believe the world was ending.
Some authors have popularized the concept of a "galactic alignment" on that date, but there is no evidence that the Maya recognized this alignment or knew about it or indeed planned the Long Count so that the first day of Baktun 13 would fall at the time of the alignment.
The alignment itself is nebulous--the winter solstice sunrise coming up in a certain area of the sky. Although it takes 26,000 years for this alignment to happen again, the sky rotates so slow (precession of the equinoxes) that we could have assigned the actual "alignment" to be any winter solstice for the last few (or next few) years. The human eye can't detect precession without instruments.
The theory behind this alignment is that because the Maya thought that area of the Milky Way (where the sun will be that morning) was the birthplace of stars, and the sun (a star) is rising through it, that means the sun is being reborn and a new world age is becoming.

Gary Jennings' new 2012 book

Gary Jennings, one of my favorite authors, has put out almost as many books since he died as he did when he was alive. (Died February 1999.) His newest posthumous offering is coming out in June and is called Gary Jennings' Apocalypse 2012 and is apparently considered part of the Aztec series.
Because GJ is known for writing about the Mayans, right? Well, there was that one section in Aztec where Dark Cloud went south to try to get his eyes fixed. I guess that qualifies.
There is nothing listed on Amazon in regard to the plot or a summary, but you know the minute I saw it on the front page of Amazon under "we recommend" I pre-ordered it. I mean, I have to. It's like a biological imperative.

2012: solar storms will wipe out our infrastructure

There have been solar flares forever, every 11 years. All of a sudden, this next cycle is going to be the "big one" apparently, wiping out our power grid and making our GPS units no longer work. (I know, when the power goes out the first thing I do is run to the car and check my GPS...not.)
According to the fear-mongers at ABC, we aren't ready for a solar space storm that could knock out our electricity, our cell phones, even our water supply. This is based on the fact that, (b)ack in 1859, a solar eruption resulted in telegraph wires burning up. ...

How bad would the "Katrina Space Storm" be for us earthlings? Well, the NAS report suggests the storm could cascade through our modern world. First, the electric grid would be vulnerable, and could be shut down. It's the first big domino that, the report says, could lead to "disruption of the transportation, communication, banking, and finance systems, and government services; the breakdown of the distribution of potable water owing to pump failure; and the loss of perishable foods and medications because of lack of refrigeration."

OMG! Stockpile food...uh, no, can't do that, the refrigerator will be dead. I guess we'll all have to resurrect our 1950's bomb shelters and hope for the best.

Nothing like a healthy dose of fear for breakfast!

4 Ollin, or the end of the world, is Thursday

Thursday is 4 Ollin/Caban/Earthquake, the date the Aztecs think the world will end. Well, on SOME 4 Ollin, we don't know which one. (Unlike the Mayans, who left us the long count pointing to 2012 for whatever reason, the Aztecs only counted their years in sheafs of 52, and didn't include a solar month with their sacred calendar enddate). 500 years ago, they believed the 5th sun was already old and dying and the final 4 Ollin earthquake was eminent. So I guess it could be Thursday. If not Thursday, then in 9 months, on the next 4 Ollin (09-25-2009).
My subconscious must have known 4 Ollin, and possibly the end of the world, were coming, because I had a very odd end of the world dream, very short and very vivid.

In the dream, I sat in the living room of an apartment. My mother slept in the bedroom. It was night, and everyone knew the world was ending that evening. Although you'd think everyone would be outside, rioting, in reality, it everything was quiet. Two laptops sat open and on before me, and I turned them both off, shut the covers, and unplugged them, thinking rather sadly "this won't save them." I knew my mother was in denial and that's why she stayed alone in her room. (I have no idea where my husband, grandmother or pets were--they weren't in my dream consciousness at all--or why I was in an apartment.)
I walked over to the big picture window, maybe 3 or 4 stories up. The building was located on a hill, so I could see pretty far across a city whose lights twinkled below, spread out to the horizon. I couldn't stand the silence so I opened the window and leaned out and started shouting; I don't remember what I said. As I yelled, I saw the lights that were nearest the horizon go out. It was like a dark cloud was racing over the earth (probably the earth turning). I stopped yelling and watched the darkness spread toward me, EMP-ing everything electronic and killing everyone. I wished my mother was awake to watch with me (somehow that, and knowing my computers would be EMPed, were sadder than my own impending death). Watching the world die is a once in a lifetime thing, and here I was alone. The darkness blotted out everything I could once see, and came up the hill, and then it took me, even as I started shouting again.
I realized I was still standing there. I wasn't dead! I turned to feel my way to my mom's room and see if she also survived.
The darkness was complete--no moon, no ambient light. But somehow I never stumbled and my outstretched fingers never encountered furniture. Before I was halfway across the room, I realized that I was indeed dead, and my body was crumpled in front of the window.
But I wasn't a ghost; somehow all at once I realized (or was told) that I was an AI and my memories and sense of self had been transferred from my body at the instant the darkness hit. (Why the EMP wouldn't have taken out an AI, I don't know.) And I also knew that my mother hadn't been spared and she was dead, most everyone else was dead, and only a few were now AIs, but I didn't know how or why.
And that was it.

new 2012 movie?

Went to see the new James Bond film today and there was a trailer for a new movie about 2012. Basically it showed a monk high on a mountaintop (Tibet, presumably) ringing a giant gong with a log over & over, and the tag line was something like "how would government prepare 6 billion people for the end of the world?" and they show waves crashing over the Himalayan mountains and then it says "they don't".
And then the mysterious find out more, google search for 2012.
No movie address, no plot, nothing.
Here is my guess. I am going to have to go to see that movie in a theater where they don't know me, because I am probably going to get my butt thrown out if they start with the whole "Mayan calendar is ending!" "Mayan calendar predicts the world is ending" BS.

Oh yes, it's even worse than I thought. Here's the website.
Because it might change, here's a screenshot of the first page. Do you see the problem?
Yes, exactly. That is THE AZTEC CALENDAR STONE! ARGH. The Aztec didn't use the Long Count! Let's say that again, louder. THE AZTECS DID NOT USE THE LONG COUNT.
The center of the Aztec sun stone (shown in the screen shot) predicts THEIR end time, which is 4 Ollin (Caban in Mayan, or Earthquake). Not 4 Ahau (12-21-2012). In fact, because 4 Ollin comes around every 9 months, who knows when the world will end?
Here's the trailer:

If it doesn't show, here's the link to it on YouTube.
I'm sorry, I didn't think there was enough water in the world to overflow the Himalayas. Perhaps I have become STUPID in my dotage. I am 40 now, after all.
As I know more about this movie, which is sure to be a travesty since Roland Emmerich is working on it, I will post.

live blog: doomsday 2012 end of days

I am fairly certain that I saw this show, Doomsday 2012: The End of Days (it's part of the "decoding the past" series in History Channel) before and it made me scream at the TV. Now I will share my thoughts with you, as I watch. I will try not to scream or throw things.
Oh yes, this is the show that repeatedly says "Mayan calendar" while showing the Aztec calendar stone. That's some stellar research there. (And Daniel Pinchbeck is part of it. His 2012 book was so bad I couldn't finish it.)
Supposedly some kind of web-bot that scours the internet is also coming up with 2012 as a significant date. Hmm, could that be because there are SO MANY WEBSITES that mention it? The web-bots are predicting a minor nuclear war in 2008 or 2009, cumulating with something bigger in 2012. (This program came out in 2007.)
The Sibyl (an oracle from 600 AD), channeled Apollo, and claimed that the world would end after the year 2000. And since she predicted Hannibal, and Constantine, she much be right about the world ending, right? And she may also have predicted Jesus (perhaps that date was 600 BC?). But, like the oracle of Apollo at Delphi, the predictions were caused by poisonous hallucinogenic gas (ethylene), not the hand of a god.
So a few women, high on poisonous fumes, who never heard of the new world, managed to predict the end of the world in perfect agreement with a calendar they also never heard of? (and which isn't ending, don't forget that factoid).
They are back to the Mayan calendar being "more accurate than our own" (it's a count of days...so the Mayans could count? Good for them), although it probably is better at predicting eclipses.
Now they are saying the 2012 day is called "hunab ku" and that the calendar "predicted" white men arriving in 1519. How does a calendar predict? It's numbers on a page. My calendar predicts tomorrow will be Tuesday! OMG call the press!
Galactic alignment once per precession. Pinchbeck says it will cause a pole shift. They manage to imply that "geophysicists" agree that it will happen, but it's cleverly worded. I mean, Einstein believed it. Yes, he might have believed in the concept of a pole shift, but not the 2012 pole shift.
And of course, the I-Ching also has the exact 2012 date. Now I own several versions of the I-Ching and NONE of them has a date in it, or a calendar, or is correlated to a calendar or dates in any way. Spending way too much time on how the I-Ching works, without showing how the 2012 thing comes into it or what hexagram shows any link in any way to 2012.
Oh, here it is: Terrance McKenna made the I-Ching into a graph and then mapped it onto history and it "matched" if you put each of the 64 hexagrams 64 times and ended it on 12-21-2012. 64x64=4096. Is that supposed to be in years? Because they didn't explain it at all, just showed a graph and then moved onto Merlin (King Arthur's Merlin, yes).
I believe this is the point where I became so irate the last time I watched this that my husband came into the house from the yard and changed the channel.
They are talking about the "historical" Merlin, and that he predicted global warming and nuclear wars (written down 1135 AD from 5th century prophecies). Merlin wasn't a name, but a title meaning mad prophet (half crazy out in the woods). He predicted the state of Virginia, the battle of Waterloo, cell phones, Hitler and more, concluding global warming and a terrorist attack on London which kills 20,000, as well as an apparent pole shift. (Which they now nicely ascribe to the Mayan calendar definitely "predicting".)
Prophecies by Mother Shipton, said that when men could fly faster than birds and go underwater like fishes, half the world would be blood. But there is no proof that she ever even existed...although her fake predictions are being used to prop up the 2012 pole shift idea. (A journalist wrote them all in the 17th century.) She predicted women would wear pants and cut off their hair. (Ohh. Imagine that. No doubt that horrible event causes the pole shift).
And here we go, into "the most famous prophetic work of all time"--and no it's not Nostradamus--the Bible.
To quote Shakespeare, I say the Bible "is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."
I really want to take these people who wrote this and crack their heads together. Every time they make a show like this, a combination of bad research, utter falsehoods, and sly insinuations, it make the whole 2012 end of the world concept explode.
The book of Revelation, of course, is really (nudge nudge) talking about 2012, right? Because the Egyptians also talked about it. (Wha-what? Where did that come from? Not from the first 44 minutes of this show, that's for sure.) The show says 666 was actually the Emperor Nero and the events of revelation are long over. So how exactly do they correlate to 2012?
It angers me that they make a flimsy case at the beginning of the show and by the end of the show those things are fact, written in stone. They bring up Black Elk and his Ghost Dance, and that he predicted after his people died out another doomsday would come for the rest of the world. Immediately after that, it's like he said "2012" in his prophecies. (I have read them, and I think he was a UFO abductee--he was taken up by the thunder people on a little cloud that took him very fast all over the world.)
Finally they move to the Hopi Prophecies: The seas rise, great quakes through the world, and the sun will get hotter, at the same time that a spiderweb device will criss-cross the world (The World Wide Web). And back to the Web-Bot Project, where the show began. Phrases connected to calendar dates came out of the Web-Bot Project in June 2001 for the next 60 to 90 days, which in hindsight pointed to 9-11-2001. And now the Web-Bot is looking at 2012, with phrases like sun, gamma ray burst, energy changes, etc.
Now that the show's over, I'm going to go into more detail on some of the information (from sources other than the show.)
I have always found the concept of a pole shift interesting. The book simply titled Pole Shift is very well written, and I've read it several times. It seems like right now the magnetic poles are wandering around. Here is a graphic from NASA showing its movement:

I couldn't find one that came closer in time, but this is certainly proof of its movement. Supposedly, the more the magnetic pole moves, the move likely it is the poles will shift.
There are 2 kinds of pole shifts. Sometimes the poles reverse--magnetic north moves to Antarctica, and south moves to the Arctic Circle. These are well-documented geologically.
The other kind of pole shift is the kind everyone is worrying about. That is when the skin of the earth slips across the molten layer it floats on. The north pole is still "up", but the land mass over it is no longer Canada or somewhere close to Canada. Maybe it's England, or Florida. This type of pole-shift (really more properly a crust shift) would be accompanied by all sorts of earth quakes, floods, and associated phenomena, and would kill many people. Lands that were temperate within a few hours will be plunged into an ice age, while tropical lands may end up somewhere temperate.
The Hope Prophecy is detailed quite well on this site, but of particular interest may be the pole shift interperation (same source as link): The Hopi also have prophesied that "Turtle Island could turn over two or three times and the oceans could join hands and meet the sky." This seems to be a prophecy of a "pole shift" -- a flipping, of the planet on its axis. The Hopi call this imminent condition -- and that of society today -- "Koyaanisqatsi", which means "world out of balance...a state of life that calls for another way. "
Now I hope that no one reading this believes that I think a pole shift is going to hit in 2012. They are simply two different subjects that interest me, that happen to intersect here.
